Botanical Name: Zamia integrifolia
Description (growth habits, light requirements & care): A hardy, slow-growing cycad that works well for low-maintenance shrub. Plant 2 feet apart. Water during dry spells. Landscape uses: surrounding trunks of palms or trees, lining driveway or walkway, accent or border plant, container plants for patio.
How you help by planting this: Provides habitat for the Atala butterfly, whose larvae feed exclusively on its leaves. Atala butterfly is North America’s largest hairstreak! Also known as the Coontie Hairstreak.
Flower and Fruit (color, characteristics, season): Produces cone-like structures, with male and female cones on separate plants. Female cones release seeds encased in bright orange-red coatings. Note: This plant puts out a cone containing seeds that are poisonous to pets and people if ingested.
Pairs well with: West Indian Lilac, Wild Coffee, Saw Palmetto, Florida Privet, and Simpson Stopper for a native garden.
