Satin Leaf Tree
Botanical Name: Chrysophyllum oliviforme
Description (growth habits, light requirements & care): A threatened, medium-sized evergreen tree growing 20-30 feet tall. Prefers full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates some drought once established. It can be used as a street tree and in commercial and residential landscapes. The leaves are very attractive, dark green above and bronzy-satin below, creating an attractive display when wind blows through the trees.
How you can help by planting this: Provides significant food for birds with its fruit. Also provides shelter for wildlife. The tree’s dense canopy offers shade for smaller plants underneath.
Flower and Fruit (color, characteristics, season): Small whitish-yellow flowers summer-fall, followed by edible, juicy, but sticky fruits that ripen to dark purple to black berry. Fruits may stain walkways and other surfaces, and may stick to ones feet and be tracked around.
Pairs well with: Swamp Milkweed, Gumbo Limbo, and Florida Firebush for a diverse, bird-friendly landscape.
