Sea Purslane
Botanical Name: Sesuvium portulacastrum
Description (growth habits, light requirements & care): A low-growing, succulent ground cover that spreads 1 foot tall in height and much broader than tall. Prefers full sun and sandy, well-drained soils, and tolerates coastal salt conditions. The succulent leaves are edible (although salty) and have been used as source of Vitamin C.
How you can help by planting this: An important stabilizer of sandy soils and prevents erosion along coastal areas while providing a habitat for small wildlife and pollinators. Can tolerate occasional flooding by sea water.
Flower and Fruit (color, characteristics, season): Green on outside, pink to pinkish-purple flowers, followed by tiny, greenish fruits.
Pairs well with: Beach Verbena, Sea Oats, and Florida Thatch Palm for a drought-tolerant coastal garden.
