Bay Cedar
Botanical Name: Suriana maritima
Description (growth habits, light requirements & care): An evergreen shrub that reaches 6-10 feet, in right conditions, could grow up to 15 feet tall. About as wide as tall, 6-10 feet wide. Prefers full sun and thrives in sandy, well-drained soils. Bay Cedar is also very salt-tolerant, making it a perfect species to plants in coastal areas.
How you can help by planting this: Plant this larval host to help the endangered Martial Scrub Hairstreak, and the more common Mallow Scrub Hairstreak. A nectar plant for these and many other butterflies and bees. Prevents soil erosion in coastal areas and provides cover for birds and other wildlife.
Flower and Fruit (color, characteristics, season): Small, yellow, star-shaped flowers bloom throughout the year, followed by small, round, brown fruits.
Pairs well with: Buttonwoods, Joewood, Sea Grape, Oxe-eye Daisy, Wild Sage and other coastal specialists.
