Botanical Name:  Hibiscus poeppigii   

Description (growth habits, light requirements & care): A small, multi-branched shrub growing 1-4 feet tall. Thrives in full shade to partial shade and well-drained soils. Drought-tolerant once established.  

How you can help by planting this: Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees (including Rose-mallow Bee-which is a hibiscus specialist), with its nectar-rich flowers. Larval host of Gray Hairstreak, Painted Lady Butterfly, Tropical Checked Skipper butterflies and four moths: Pearly Wood Nymph, Yellow Scallop Moth, IO Moth, and Delightful Bird-Dropping Moths. Ants feed on the flower nectar.

Flower and Fruit (color, characteristics, season): Bright red, lantern-shaped flowers bloom year-round, followed by small red fruits that attract birds.  

Pairs well with: Florida Firebush, Goldenrod, and Blue Porterweed for a vibrant wildlife garden.
