Plant Name: Little Strongbark

Botanical Name: Bourreria cassinifolia

Description (growth habits, light requirements & care): This is one of our all time favorites. It blooms frequently throughout the year, with showy white flowers that grow in clusters. Very fragrant, with a relaxing aroma akin to gardenia. The pollinators love the fragrance too, butterflies frequent the blooms, hummingbirds visit the flowers in the winter, native bees love their sweet nectar, it’s an all around WINNER!

This plant can be planted in mass to form a beautiful hedge that will give you the privacy you are searching for. Let it grow to your desired height and start to form the hedge by pruning of shearing the plant into shape.

How you help by planting this: A Butterfly and Bird MAGNET, especially hummingbirds! It’s also an endangered native shrub that grows in our imperiled Pine Rockland habitat. So you’ll not only be feeding and giving wildlife cover, you’ll also help keep this plant in existence in one of the few places it grows, South Florida and Cuba.

Flower and Fruit (color, characteristics, season): Showy fragrant white flowers. They aren’t large, but the bunches pack a punch! After the flowers are pollinated, a fruit develops and ripens into a juicy-looking orange fruit which is a favorite of songbirds.

Pairs well with: Wild Coffee, Wild Sage, Pineland Croton, West Indian Lilac, and other Pine Rockland species.
